Success Story: Waste Reduction & Savings with The Leanpath Program

Savings in Action
At Yankee Alliance, we help members like Southcoast Health connect to programs such as Leanpath to drive cost savings and operational efficiency. Leanpath provides a foodservice management system that focuses on reducing food waste through real-time daily measuring and monitoring. Southcoast Health, partnered with Leanpath to implement a food waste prevention solution, measuring and preventing food waste with the goal of saving time, money, and the environment.

In March 2023, Leanpath’s program was implemented at three Southcoast Health sites in order to record and capture a photo of every food waste transaction recorded by the foodservice team. For six months, these photos provided important detail on the context and condition of waste, creating shareable images that chefs used to drive team awareness and discover opportunities for improvement.

Prevention Impact
Through the program, an impact update was generated to provide an overview of food waste prevention. Using data recorded by the foodservice team, the report summarizes the food waste profile, food waste reduction performance, and sustainability impact of participating hospital sites. Waste prevention was measured by comparing the change in food waste levels over time against each location’s unique waste baseline. Baselines are set at the beginning of the program to establish average food waste levels prior to working on prevention.

Enabling Savings Through Partnerships
For Southcoast Health, understanding why food waste occurs was crucial in order to create effective plans for preventing it in the future. Every time a foodservice staff records food waste with Leanpath, they capture the reason for the waste, empowering chefs to turn their food waste data into action.

Southcoast’s partnership with Leanpath food waste prevention technology enabled them to dramatically reduce food waste and operate a more sustainable facility.


By reducing food waste, they’re addressing the top-ranked solution for emissions reduction per Project Drawdown, and advancing critically needed progress toward Target 12.3 — the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal calling for a 50% reduction in global food loss and waste by 2030.
